Braided silver cuff

$450.00
Orijyn
Asia / Laos

The intricate and detailed design of this sterling silver jewelry was once reserved exclusively for members of the Laotian Royal Family.

As I was walking down a crowded aisle of an international folk art market, a necklace in the Orijyn stall caught my eye.  There were many people around the artisan's stall, so I squeezed between them to get a better look at the necklace and other pieces being displayed.  In an instant I lost myself in the examination of the delicate design in the jewelry and could see that real skill had gone into creating these pieces.  I overhead Mark speak about his sustainable business practices and the Laotian Royal Court designs and I was hooked.  I promised myself that I would have this detailed and historically important work as part of the VirtuArte collection.

This sterling silver bracelet and the story behind it are matched in their rich complexity.  It was handcrafted by the same master craftsmen who once created jewelry for the Lao Royal Family, until the Royal Government left power in 1975.  Each strand of silver found in this bracelet is braided to create that look of silver rope.  The silver rope is than braided and secured into a unique pattern with bold silver end caps.  I'm pleased to help Mark and his talented artisans make this beautiful collection of jewelry available to the Western world for the first time.

Orijyn was founded by Mark Sloneker to help the master silver craftsmen and village women weaving artisans find markets for their products outside of Laos. The goal is to introduce this talented group of artisans to self sustaining business practices that will empower themselves, their families and communities. With this direct-to-the-source revenue stream, Orijyn helps to preserve these age-old handicraft skills and attract future generations to the craft.
