This artisanal scarf designed by Carol Cassidy honors traditional Cambodian weaving techniques and helps landmine survivors earn a sustainable income.
I first came across Carol Cassidy's beautiful textiles years before founding VirtuArte. She designs and weaves in a lovely old French colonial mansion where there were hand-woven scarves, shawls, wall hangings, and pillows on every surface, drawing me to touch and linger over their rich textures and patterns. My eyes were moving from item to item noticing colors and designs different from anything I had yet seen in my world travels. The moment I founded VirtuArte I contacted Carol and asked her to let me share her engrossing and beautiful work with the world.
Carol's story continues to inspire me. Fifteen years after setting up her studio in Laos, she became the owner and manager of Weaves of Cambodia, a weaving studio located in a remote village in Northern Cambodia. Carol advised the weavers on products and designs which lead to higher quality products being sold in shops in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Today more than 30 landmine survivors work at Weaves of Cambodia keeping the traditional Khmer art alive while earning a sustainable income.
