This handbag designed by Dalia Pascal is made of a reclaimed huipil, a richly embroidered cotton blouse worn by Mayan women in Mexico and Central America.
I was walking down the aisle of an international craft show when out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of vibrant color. As I walked closer I saw an array of elegant handbags that looked to be embroidered. I couldn't be sure so I asked the person in the booth how they were made. She explained to me the handbags were crafted from old Mayan dresses and blouses from Mexico and Guatemala that had been recycled. I loved the idea of a traditional craft being recycled into another use as functional and beautiful as the first. That's what VirtuArte is all about!
Dalia Pascal purchases the handwoven, embroidered dresses and blouses from the original owners. She then works with a group of local artisans to craft this beautifully functional artwork from the recovered textiles in a combination with leather and suede. This handbag, made from a huipil and combined with suede, is a bright, fun and beautiful way to bring a loving warmth to your wardrobe year-round. Today Dalia's studio not only keeps the artisans sustainably employed, but is also working with government entities to train their children so the tradition can grow and continue on.
