White River, South Africa
Creative Copper is located in the Mpumalange Providence, which means the "Land of the Rising Surf," of White River, South Africa where 3.3 million people live. It employs 70% women and a large number of disabled people both male and female. The crafters are treated with respect and earn a fair trade wage.
Inspired by the Ndlebele culture, whose art has always played a vital role in their day to day lives, Creative Copper works to capture the allure of Africa by mixing the traditional with the modern, simple yet complex. The ritual of eating and sharing is acknowledged as an important event in African life. This custom of Ubuntu (sharing) has been carried through in the unique range of tableware made by Creative Copper. The designs are inspired by patterns used by the Ndlebele women in their tribal dress. The swirls, coils and contours are replicated on these hand crafted pieces, which are created predominately by women crafters.
Traditional techniques are used to create the tableware collection from a combination of copper, brass and high grade stainless steel. Each piece is annealed and burnished with care, to bring out the beautiful earthly colors within the metals. This process ensures that each piece is truly unique.
