Holiday Gift Shopping — Focused or Scattershot?

Nov 21, 2017

Holiday gift shopping is now in full swing.  Christmas is four weeks away.  Hanukkah begins in two weeks and Kwanzaa begins on the 26th of December.  Is your stress level starting to climb?  In previous blog posts I talked about a process that will help you become a more intentional Holiday gift giver and, at the same time, reduce the stress in your Holiday gift shopping.

Step #1 — Make a list of all the people you are thinking about giving a gift to.

Did you create your Holiday gift list?

Step #2 — Prioritize the names on your list with a 1, 2 or 3 — P, M or U.

Did you prioritize the names on your list?

Step #3 — Answer the questions listed for each person on your list.

Did you answer the questions I gave for each person?

If you haven’t I would recommend you spend some time completing these three steps before you go to the mall or start looking online.  If you don’t know whom you are shopping for or what you are looking for, you will end up wasting a lot of time, not accomplishing very much, and feeling stressed because you haven’t bought anything yet.

Step #4 in the process of becoming a more intentional Holiday gift giver is to decide, before you start shopping, what you are going to give each person on your list.  You’ve written down information about each person by answering the questions.  Spend some time thinking about what you can give, narrow down your gift choices for each person before you leave your house or “google” Amazon.com.

For example one person on your list likes to cook.  Possible gifts for this person could be a new cookbook, the latest kitchen gadget, a set of cutting knives or a cooking class.  You’ve decided on the latest kitchen gadget and/or cookbook.  Next to that person’s name write those items down.  Now you know to get the cookbook you can go onto Amazon.com.  For the latest kitchen gadget you can go onto Amazon.com, Williams-Sonoma.com or go to a Williams Sonoma store.

If you take the time to do this, it will make the actual purchasing of the gifts so much easier and take less time.  You will be focused, know exactly what you are looking for and where you need to go to purchase the item instead of wondering around the mall or surfing the internet trying to figure out what you are going to purchase.  Before you know it you will be marking off the last name/gift on your list and who knows, you might even enjoy the shopping experience.

Now you’ve finished purchasing your gifts, however you are only half way through the intentional gift giving process.  Next I will talk about how to create a gift giving experience for each of your recipients.
