This hand-embroidered wearable work of art from India's Kala
Raksha Vidhyalaya envelop you in centuries-old history touched with
contemporary embellishments that honor India's past and present.
The
first time I saw the work of the Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya (Art
Preservation Institute), from Kutch, India, I was drawn in by their
striking blend of traditional embroidery styles with contemporary
embellishments. In talking with Judy Frater, the project director for
the Institute, she explained that her artisans are thoroughly trained in
traditional embroidery styles but once these are mastered they are also
encouraged to innovate fresh concepts that honor their roots. It was
this dual purpose of cultural preservation coupled with beautiful modern
interpretation that made this a must-have for the VirtuArte
collection. And when I learned that the decades-old Institute has
sustained the local economies of seven communities by training and work
with many hundreds of embroiderers since its founding I felt compelled
to share their story, art and culture with the world.
