A beautiful picture frame handcrafted by Peruvian artisans utilizing techniques first learned from the Spanish.
Reverse painted glass is an art form consisting of applying paint to a piece of glass and viewing the image by turning the glass over and looking through the glass at the image.
These techniques arrived in Peru with the Spaniards in the 16th century. In the beginning local artisans copied the Spanish techniques, styles and themes found on mirrors and other household objects. However, as with other crafts brought by the Europeans, the Peruvians developed their own styles. Over time, reverse painted glass became a traditional Peruvian craft.
