This bracelet designed by Anna Richerby was inspired by forms found in nature and handcrafted by a South African beader using complex weaving techniques.
While in Cape Town I was window shopping at the V&A Waterfront and wondered into a "pop-up" boutique. As I was looking around a particular necklace caught my eye. I am not sure what was first, the color scheme or the shapes that made up the necklace, that made me want to take a closer look. The necklace was made up of beaded triangles that started out small gradually getting larger and then gradually getting smaller again. I had never seen anything like it. I tried the necklace on, fell in love with it and immediately knew I wanted to add it and other pieces by this designer to the VirtuArte collection.
At the urging and insistence of her bead work students, Anna Richerby launched Beloved Beadwork in 2009 with an aim to push the boundaries of the bead work tradition in South Africa. Anna and the team of 20 bead artisans utilize techniques from across the globe, both ancient and modern, to create vastly different visual and tactile effects. Along with creating distinctive, original works of art, Anna and the artisans of Beloved Beadwork have forged a path that, they hope, has started to change how a company like theirs and people like themselves are portrayed in the craft sector, both locally and internationally.
